11/11/2025PLAYERS, TOURNAMENT

The young Lithuanian, born in 2004, has fought his way from 185 to 130 in the ATP rankings following a breakthrough season including a title in Lisbon and key wins.

The 2025 season marked a turning point for Vilius Gaubas. The 20‑year‑old Lithuanian claimed his second Challenger title in April at the I Open Menorca ATP Challenger 100 and embarked on a strong run through the ATP circuit, moving from No 185 to No 130 in the rankings. With standout performances on clay and wins over high‑level opponents, Gaubas confirms his upward trajectory.

A Profile on the Rise

Born on 29 December 2004 in Šiauliai, Lithuania, Gaubas stands 1.78 m tall, weighs 72 kg, plays right‑handed with a two‑handed backhand.
In February 2024 he reached his best doubles ranking (No 1036), but it is in singles where he has firmly established his potential. In August 2024 he clinched his first ATP Challenger title in Cordenons, Italy, defeating the Spaniard Carlos Taberner. His best ranking so far: No 130 (as of 27 October 2025).

The Turning Point: Menorca

The first major milestone of 2025 for Gaubas came in Ciutadella during the I Open Menorca ATP Challenger 100 (31 March – 6 April). Entering as seed No 7 and ranked No 185 on 3 March, he asserted himself.
His victory in Menorca proved pivotal. In the final he defeated Spain’s Pol Martín Tiffon 6/0-6/4 to capture his second Challenger title and notch key ranking points.

Results After Menorca: Steady Climb and Consistency

Following his success in Menorca, Gaubas recorded a string of strong showings:

  • Madrid (7 April): Quarter‑final at the Madrid Challenger, lost to Marin Čilić (117) 7/6(6)-4/6-6/7(4).
  • Rome Challenger (21 April): Finalist, defeated by Matteo Gigante (195) 2/6-6/3-4/6.
  • ATP Masters 1000 Rome (5 May): Won against Denis Shapovalov (28) 6/3-6/4, then lost to Alexander Zverev (2) 4/6-0/6.
  • Hagen (28 July): Quarter‑final, lost to Oskar Wallin (465) 6/7(4)-6/7(10).
  • Bonn (4 August): Quarter‑final, lost to Joel Schwaerzler (342) 6/4-3/6-6/7(4).
  • Seville (1 September): Quarter‑final, lost to Genaro Alberto Olivieri (259) 6/1-3/6-5/7.

Late‑Season Surge: Lisbon and Braga

  • Lisbon (22 September): Champion. Semifinal win against Ignacio Buse (116) 7/5-7/6(4), final victory over Henrique Rocha (171) 6/7(3)-6/3-6/4.
  • Braga (29 September): Finalist, lost to Leo Mikrut (239) 3/6-4/6.

With these outcomes, Gaubas climbed 55 places to reach No 130 in the ATP standings by 27 October 2025.

At Just 20 Years Old—and With Plenty of Room to Grow

Gaubas’s season is defined by consistency and progress. His win in Menorca wasn’t a detached success but the beginning of a stage marked by steady results in Challenger events and early success on the ATP Tour. Beating Shapovalov and showing up strongly in Rome signal a player capable of going further.

At only 20 years old, his growth potential is clear. In 2025 he proved his composure at key moments and strength on clay—his most familiar surface. From his victory in Ciutadella to triumph in Lisbon, the Lithuanian advanced 55 places in just seven months. Everything points to his entry into the Top 100 being a matter of time.

And that’s because the Open Menorca ATP Challenger 100 isn’t just a date on the calendar: it is the perfect springboard where tennis’s big‑future stars begin their journey toward the Top 100 and the sport’s most prestigious tournaments. Vilius Gaubas knows it well.
