The young Peruvian accelerates his rise after shining at the Open Menorca ATP Challenger 100

The Open Menorca ATP Challenger 100 is far from just another stop on the tennis calendar. For many emerging talents, it represents a competitive turning point — a stage where raw potential is tested against more established names on the tour.

In the 2025 edition, one of the standout stories of the year was that of Peruvian player Ignacio Buse, whose progression through the rankings captured attention. At just 21 years old, Buse finished 2025 ranked No. 104 in the ATP after climbing 112 places since his run in Ciutadella. That upward trajectory was built on a series of significant results across Challenger events, ATP 250 tournaments and even Grand Slam action.

Menorca: the start of a defining season

Buse entered the I Open Menorca ATP Challenger 100, held from 31 March to 6 April 2025, ranked No. 216 and unseeded — a position that didn’t fully mirror his competitive ability or recent improvements.

In the main draw’s first round, he produced one of the tournament’s headline results by defeating Marin Čilić, the third seed, in the round of 32. From there, the Peruvian put together a string of strong performances, ultimately reaching the semifinals, where he was beaten by Vilius Gaubas, who went on to win the title.

More than just a result, Menorca proved to be a launching pad: a boost in confidence, visibility and ranking points for a player ready to elevate his level.

A young profile with solid foundations

Born on 25 March 2004 in Lima, Ignacio Buse stands 1.83 metres tall, weighs 78 kg and plays right‑handed with a two‑handed backhand. His development has been progressive, with a firm foundation built in both singles and doubles during his junior years.

On the doubles front, his résumé includes notable achievements: he was junior doubles finalist at Roland Garros in 2022 alongside fellow Peruvian Gonzalo Bueno, and the duo also secured gold at the 2021 Junior Pan American Games. These early successes hint at a mature approach to big occasions, despite his young age.

Spring confirmation on the Challenger circuit

After Menorca, Buse maintained his upward momentum through the spring months. In April, he reaffirmed his competitive promise by reaching the semifinals of the Aix‑en‑Provence Challenger, where only Borna Ćorić (104) halted his progress in a three‑set match.

In May, he added another solid result at the Vicenza Challenger, reaching the quarter‑finals before a narrow defeat to Lukas Neumayer. These performances underlined that his run in Menorca was no flash in the pan but part of a genuine rise.

Impact summer: ATP 250 and a Grand Slam debut

The summer marked a key shift. In July, Buse registered a noteworthy run at the ATP 250 in Gstaad, where he made the semifinals, falling to the Argentine Juan Manuel Cerúndolo in a strong showing against seasoned opposition.

A month later, Buse made his US Open debut, appearing in the main draw of the New York Grand Slam. Although he exited in the first round to American Ben Shelton, the experience represented a valuable step in his development on the sport’s biggest stage.

September milestone: first Challenger title

The highlight of Buse’s season came on 1 September, when he lifted the title at the Sevilla Challenger — his first ATP Challenger singles crown. In the final he defeated Argentine Genaro Alberto Olivieri in three sets, capping off weeks of strong competitive play.

That same month, he also reached the semifinals of the Lisbon Challenger, once more falling to Vilius Gaubas, illustrating a recurring rivalry during the campaign.

Finishing strong and solidifying his ranking

As the season drew to a close, Buse kept up his consistency. He reached the quarter‑finals in Lima and then finished as runner‑up at the Montevideo Challenger, where only Chilean Cristian Garín stood between him and another title.

By 22 December 2025, Ignacio Buse closed the season ranked No. 104 in the ATP, after rising 112 places from where he was before his Menorca breakthrough.

Menorca as a real launchpad

Buse’s 2025 journey clearly shows how a well‑positioned Challenger event can help ignite a breakthrough. Far from being a ceiling, his semifinal run in Ciutadella served as a springboard.

With measured progress, sustained results and steady improvement, the Peruvian has built a season that places him on the verge of the Top 100, reinforcing the idea that the Open Menorca ATP Challenger 100 is a stage where rising stars begin to carve out their path towards the elite of the tennis world.
