Albert Ramos-Viñolas and Guillermo García López cross paths once more in Ciutadella.

Back in February 2013, the Spanish Davis Cup team — captained at the time by Álex Corretja — faced a tough first-round tie away against Canada. The hosts had chosen Vancouver as the venue for what proved to be a demanding showdown.

Spain’s squad included two experienced players, Marc López and Marcel Granollers, joined by two debutants: Albert Ramos-Viñolas and Guillermo García López.

In the opening match, Corretja selected Ramos-Viñolas to make his debut against Canada’s No.1, Milos Raonic. Albert started strong, taking the first set in a tight 7-6 tiebreak, unsettling the home fans. But Raonic recovered well, eventually winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to claim the opening point.

Later, with Canada leading 2-1, it was García López’s turn to step in — also against Raonic. The Canadian sealed the tie with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Now, twelve years later, Ramos-Viñolas and García López find themselves back on court — this time at the Club Tenis Ciutadella, during the Open Menorca ATP Challenger 100.

They return in different roles, but with the same passion for tennis: Ramos-Viñolas is preparing for his first-round clash against top seed Billy Harris, while García López is courtside as coach of 20-year-old Lithuanian talent Vilius Gaubas, who will face Germany’s Henri Squire in his tournament opener tomorrow.

A full-circle moment in Menorca — where tennis past and future meet again.
