Menorca opens its doors to elite tennis with the ATP Challenger 100, a tournament that blends sport, sustainability, and the unique charm of the ‘calm island’.

The Open Menorca ATP Challenger 100, unveiled at the prestigious International Tourism Fair (FITUR), promises to be much more than just a sporting event.

From 30 March to 6 April, Club Tenis Ciutadella will be the epicentre of a tournament that merges top-tier tennis, Menorca’s natural beauty, and a commitment to sustainability. With international players and an unparalleled setting, this event marks a milestone for the ‘calm island’.

A tournament putting Menorca on the sporting map

During the presentation at FITUR, Adolfo Vilafranca, president of the Consell Insular de Menorca, highlighted the event’s significance for the island. “Menorca is stepping forward into the future with a tournament that serves as a springboard for the young stars of world tennis”, he stated.

He emphasised that this tournament, made possible by the collaboration of public administrations (Consell, Govern Balear and local councils) and private enterprises, not only positions Menorca on the international circuit but also strengthens its image as a sustainable, sporty and diverse tourist destination.

“We’ve preserved our identity and natural environment, but we’ve also innovated, offering a year-round tourism and sporting proposition”, he added. This approach aims to attract visitors outside the high season, showcasing Menorca’s unique character beyond its summer beaches.

A tennis legend’s perspective: Álex Corretja

Former tennis star Álex Corretja brought a professional and emotional perspective to the fifth-best tennis tournament currently held in Spain. “Menorca is a special and beautiful place that turns tennis into a unique experience for players, fans and organisers”, he remarked.

Corretja also highlighted the impact of the tournament on the ATP Challenger Tour. “This event enhances the tour’s prestige by associating it with the quality and exclusivity that define Menorca”.

Additionally, he pointed out the positive economic impact, estimated at €700,000 to €1 million, which will benefit local businesses such as hotels, restaurants and shops.

Menorca: The perfect stage for tennis

Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993, Menorca combines a protected natural environment with top-tier facilities. Its mediterranean climate, offering pleasant temperatures in late March and early April, provides ideal conditions for outdoor tennis.

Moreover, Club Tenis Ciutadella, the tournament’s venue, boasts high-quality infrastructure that ensures an excellent experience for both players and spectators.

Vilafranca invited participants to explore the island’s attractions during their stay. “I hope they enjoy this island and leave with not only sporting memories but also the experience of having played in one of Europe’s most special destinations”, he said.

For Menorca, associating its name with the ATP circuit is both an opportunity and a testament to the island’s appeal all year round. “Menorca has 365 opportunities to showcase its culture, gastronomy and landscapes”, the president of the Consell Insular de Menorca noted, highlighting the island’s potential beyond the summer months.

An inclusive and community-focused tournament

The Open Menorca ATP Challenger 100 will be a sports spectacle and a meeting point for the local community and visitors alike.

The organisers have planned parallel activities, such as tennis clinics and exhibitions, involving local clubs and fans. These initiatives aim to inspire new generations and spark interest in tennis.

Álex Corretja stressed the importance of bringing professional tennis closer to communities. “Watching international-level players can inspire young Menorcans, motivating them to dream of their own journey in the sport”, he said.

Economic impact and sustainability

A key highlight of the tournament is its commitment to sustainability. In line with Menorca’s values as a Biosphere Reserve, the event will prioritise responsible practices, such as renewable energy use and proper waste management.

From an economic perspective, the Open Menorca ATP Challenger 100 is poised to boost off-season tourism. Visitors attending the event will stimulate the local economy, benefiting various sectors on the island.

Moreover, international media coverage will project Menorca as a high-quality sports tourism destination.

A vision for the future

The Open Menorca ATP Challenger 100’s launch at FITUR marks the beginning of a promising relationship between the island and the ATP circuit. Vilafranca underscored the symbolism of the tournament’s ‘first serve’: “It’s the start of a journey we hope will be long and fruitful, solidifying Menorca as a leading sports destination”.

This event serves as a bridge between sport, tourism and sustainability, showing the world that Menorca is much more than a summer destination.

With its natural beauty, vibrant culture, and commitment to the environment, the island is ready to welcome international tennis and the visitors eager to experience its magic.
